Nació el 7 de diciembre de 1885 en
Wellngborogh, Northamptonshire, en
Inglaterra, estudió en la Friends' Schools
en Ackworth, después en Bootham en Yorkshire
y finalmente en la Universidad de
Manchester, donde fue asistente de zoología
de 1907 a 1909. Luego partió hacia la India,
en el Museo Indio en Calcuta, donde fue
asistente de 1910 a 1920, en este último
periodo fue nombrado superintendente del
Gobierno en el Museo de Madrás, donde estuvo
al menos hasta (1939) e hizo numerosos
viajes a la India, Birmania y Ceilán,
ocupándose también de la iconografía y la
arquitectura indígena.
Como zoólogo, se interesó en
determinados grupos de animales: Hidroides,
Poliquetos, Pédipalpes, Arañas, pero son,
sobre todo, estas últimas las que atrajeron
su atención, publicando una docena de
trabajos sobre la fauna aracnológica de la
India.
